This piece imagines and musically illustrates a young Chopin growing up in Melbourne, Australia on a hot, stifling summers day. It begins with the tune of Greensleeves (on glockenspiel) and Chopin knows that this means the "Mr Whippy" ice cream van has arrived in his street! Thrilled, he runs outside to the van with all the other children from his neighbourhood and buys an ice cream. Chopin squeals in delight (1st violins play natural harmonics), but after only a few licks, tragically, Chopin's ice cream falls from its cone (descending glissandos from violins and violas) and splats to the ground (Bartok pizzicato from cellos and basses). Chopin mourns the loss of his ice cream (all strings play Chopin's famous Funeral March from Piano Sonata No. 2). Suddenly the tune of Greensleeves is heard again (on glockenspiel) and this instantly interrupts the mourning! Mr Whippy is back and Chopin is once again overjoyed as he sprints back to the van to buy another ice cream!
